Sugar Skull Rock Painting Ideas

Sugar Skull Rock Painting Ideas

This sugar skull craft is a great way to help celebrate Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. I’ve done sugar skull makes before but with dimensional puffy paint. This time I wanted to do a more traditional sugar skull rock painting design and used paint pens. This design was inspired by these amazing cookies created by Melissa at Sugarbombe. See below for the step-by-step rock painting tutorial and the best paint pens to use on rocks.

    • Color the eyes, nose, and hair in black.

3. Mr. Skull Directions (pics 4-8)

    • Draw a white line at the top of the sombrero to show where the brim is. On the bottom of the brim, take a bright color like aqua and draw another line and add small tassels.
    • Make small dots around the eyes.
    • Draw large flower shapes on the sombrero using blue, purple, and green.
    • Using complementing colors on the flowers, draw small curved lines to outline the petals of the flowers. Add green leaves around the flowers.
    • Use those same colors to add small designs to the sombrero.
    • In descending sizes, draw small dots on the side of the skull.
    • Outline the skull in a thin black line. Add any additional decorations to Mr. Sugar Skull to give him a fun personality!

    • Add small round edges to the outside edges of the eyes.
    • Draw large flower shapes in her hair. We chose pink, orange, and yellow.
    • Using complementing colors on the flowers, draw small curved lines to outline the petals of the flowers. Add green leaves around the flowers.
    • Add two small hearts on her cheeks. Draw a small dot design in the middle of her eyes on her forehead. Add a thin white line in the middle of her hair to part it down the center.
    • Add a thin black line for her smile. Draw small criss crossing lines to complete it.
    • Using orange and yellow, draw two hoops, one small and one large, for the earrings. Use complementing colors like pink to add small dots to complete the earrings.
    • Outline the skull in a thin black line. Add any additional decorations to Mrs. Sugar Skull to give her some pizzazz!
