I have a thing for jars! I can’t get enough of them and use them all over my craft room to hold supplies, markers, and embellishments. And it’s SO easy to make these jars cute. I promise this is such an easy mason jar DIY. I’ve figured out the best way to paint mason jars and, believe me, there are a lot of tutorials that I’ve tried that do not work. This works! I promise.
You’ll find too that painted mason jars make awesome gifts. You can fill them with candy, crayons, flowers, make-up brushes, or utensils…You get the idea. And the design possibilities are endless. Below I’ll show the best way to paint a mason jar and share some fun animal-themed mason jars I made for my craft room.
- Mason jars – I found mine at Michaels craft stores. I used the 8oz jars.
- White primer – This is my favorite primer, and the only one I use.
- Acrylic paint – I pretty much always use Martha Stewart acrylic paint. I love the color selection and vibrancy.
- Paint markers – I can’t tell you how often I use my Posca Paint markers. You can use them for so many projects, including drawing on rocks. They’re especially great for small details on projects like this!
- Sealant (optional)
Step 1: Spray your mason jars with an even coat of white primer.
Step 2: Cover the jars with your favorite acrylic paint colors. I used two coats of paint.
Step 3: Use a pencil to lightly sketch the animal faces onto the jars.
Step 4: Go over the pencil tracing with your paint markers. Here’s a little tip for the paint markers, be sure to shake them well before use, and always test them first on a piece of paper.
Step 5 (optional): Seal your jars with a protective sealant. I usually skip this step, and honestly my jars still look great and haven’t chipped.
I used the same steps to also create these adorable rainbow mason jars.
